Pride Awareness Month

June 2021 is Pride awareness month.

Pride is celebrated each June in honour of the Stonewall Uprising, which took place in 1969 in Manhattan. There have been great developments in the LGBTQ community and here at Wyke we promote the equality and diversity of all our students, and we expect all students to feel safe and supported. You may feel like you have questions but are not quite sure who to ask.

There are a number of services available who offer advice, support and guidance, including;

Hull LGBT+ Forum is a voice and representative body for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Hull and the East Riding. The Forum represents LGBT+ people in many community issues such as hate crime reporting, sexual health research, sexual health advice and much more. They provide a drop in facility and a 'safe space' environment for one to one sessions. Free condoms are also available. The service is free and confidential. The LGBT+ Forum meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month 7pm until 9pm at the Guildhall in Hull City Centre. The Forum office is situated in the Community Enterprise Centre, Cottingham Road, Hull.

It can be characterised by physical feelings of "butterflies", nausea, sweats,needing to go to the toilet more often, dizziness and more. Sometimes we procrastinate. What you are experiencing is normal. If something is worthwhile and important to us we tend to feel nervous. In a sense it validates how important it is to us. If we had no nerves at all that would be unusual. So what can you do about it? Talk to someone. A friend, a family member, a teacher, a tutor, a counsellor. Research has shown that talking and naming feelings helps to deactivate the brain's fight or flight warning system which manifests as anxiety.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2023. Wear Green!

The theme of Mental Health Awareness Week is anxiety , a common feeling that can sometimes get out of control. Mental Health Awareness Week, now in its 23rd year, runs from 15-21 May and is hosted by the charity, Mental Health Foundation. This year, the theme is ‘anxiety’. Across the UK, people are encouraged to get involved by sharing their experience of anxiety and the things that can help with the hashtag #ToHelpMyAnxiety. As part of the campaign, the Mental Health Foundation will be publishing guidance on how we can manage and improve feelings of anxiety and prevent them from developing into a more serious mental health problem. Welcome back second years and a warm new welcome to our first years. The start of a new term can be both exciting and scary. When something makes us feel nervous it usually means its important to us. But sometimes it can be a little overwhelming. Wyke have trained staff to help support you through those tricky first days and beyond.As a Wyke student you can reach out to any staff and they will be happy to point you in the right direction, whether it is finding your way to class or wanting someone to talk to we are here to help.
