White Ribbon Day - 25th November 2021

Thursday 25th November is White Ribbon Day which is followed by a 16 days of action initiative to end male violence against women.

Each year, thousands of people, organisations and education establishments make the White Ribbon Promise, wear a White Ribbon and raise awareness.

This year, Wyke Sixth Form College will be supporting the cause with a variety of staff and student led initiatives including:

Wearing black and white on campus day

Promotion of the cause in tutorials and staff briefings

A “make the promise” station in the Atrium

Student performances around this sensitive topic

An informative presentation by our Student Executive

Creative writing activities

Wearing the white ribbon

Fundraising events

The promotion of help and support agencies throughout college

16 days of action following the 25th November

We aim to help provide greater understanding amongst our young people, staff and the wider college community about what needs to change along with ensuring people know where to find help.

It can be characterised by physical feelings of "butterflies", nausea, sweats,needing to go to the toilet more often, dizziness and more. Sometimes we procrastinate. What you are experiencing is normal. If something is worthwhile and important to us we tend to feel nervous. In a sense it validates how important it is to us. If we had no nerves at all that would be unusual. So what can you do about it? Talk to someone. A friend, a family member, a teacher, a tutor, a counsellor. Research has shown that talking and naming feelings helps to deactivate the brain's fight or flight warning system which manifests as anxiety.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2023. Wear Green!

The theme of Mental Health Awareness Week is anxiety , a common feeling that can sometimes get out of control. Mental Health Awareness Week, now in its 23rd year, runs from 15-21 May and is hosted by the charity, Mental Health Foundation. This year, the theme is ‘anxiety’. Across the UK, people are encouraged to get involved by sharing their experience of anxiety and the things that can help with the hashtag #ToHelpMyAnxiety. As part of the campaign, the Mental Health Foundation will be publishing guidance on how we can manage and improve feelings of anxiety and prevent them from developing into a more serious mental health problem. Welcome back second years and a warm new welcome to our first years. The start of a new term can be both exciting and scary. When something makes us feel nervous it usually means its important to us. But sometimes it can be a little overwhelming.
