How to Deal with Exam Stress

Image
What is exam stress? Exam stress can be different things to different people, and the stress can feel different at different times. Many words can describe the feelings of exam stress, for example: Ovewhelmed Scared Anxious Weighed down Unable to focus Under pressure Angry Impatient Depressed Alone/Lonely What is exam stress? It can be characterised by physical feelings of "butterflies", nausea, sweats, needing to go to the toilet more often, dizziness and more. Sometimes we procrastinate. What you are experiencing is normal. If something is worthwhile and important to us we tend to feel nervous. In a sense it validates how important it is to us. If we had no nerves at all that would be unusual. So what can you do about it? Talk to someone. A friend, a family member, a teacher, a tutor, a counsellor. Research has shown that talking and naming feelings helps to deactivate the brain's fight or flight warning system which manifests as anxiety. ...

January 2023

Image
Welcome back everyone. Happy New Year. Although sometimes January can feel a little flat after the Christmas break. So now is the time to think about making self care a priority. What do we mean by self care? As we are all individuals our approach to self care will be as diverse as we are. So here are just a few ideas to get you started. Make yourself a new playlist for a new year, some upbeat tunes. Think about one thing in your daily food regime you could switch out to something more healthy. Be wary of New Year's resolutions, sometimes this can make us feel guilty if we don't 'stick' to them.So perhaps make them more manageable smaller but just as important steps. e.g. when I get home I will turn my phone off for an hour and read. Exercise, a short walk or a few stretches to start the day. Meet with friends, dont be afraid to talk. Try using 'I could' instead of 'I should

The Bi Visibility Day story : The annual 23rd of September celebration started in 1999 as International Celebrate Bisexuality Day, created by three bi activists from the USA – Wendy Curry of Maine, Michael Page of Florida (also well-known as the creator of the bisexual flag), and Gigi Raven Wilbur of Texas. It has also been variously known as Bi Pride Day, Bi Day and Celebrate Bisexuality Day. The use of the name Bi Visibility Day instead started with UK with Jen Yockney, and spread first across Europe and then further around the world. That year it was marked in the USA, UK and South Africa: this list has grown to more than 30 countries in recent times. IT’S THE 24TH ANNUAL BI VISIBILITY DAY . The date highlights bisexuality and the challenges posed by biphobia and bisexual erasure, as well as celebrating the work of a growing number of local, national and international organisations around the world which champion bisexual visibility and equality. Endings

Image
Endings…. Summer holidays are upon us so that means endings. Second years will finish college for good whilst those of you in year 1 will be contemplating the end of a first year at college. Whether you are finishing completely or ending for the summer and returning in the autumn, all of you are experiencing some kind of ending. After all that build up to exams, exam stress and the focus on the academic, what now? It will be different for everyone, some will be embracing the end, some of you will be apprehensive about the end, whilst other will feel a bit numb, all that effort and angst and now its stopped. With endings also come beginnings. So how do I shift from an ending to a beginning? The transition for some will be swift with plans and schemes in place, for others there will be a time of gradual transition. There is no one right way, we are all individuals. But here is a checklist of things to consider whilst experiencing that transition. Make Plans. If not already d...

PRIDE.....where did it begin?

Image
PRIDE… where did it start? 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Pride march in the UK. On 1 July 1972 a ‘carnival parade’ of protest was held from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square London. It was the first Gay Pride in a city in the UK arranged for the nearest Saturday to the Stonewall date of 28 June. The Stonewall Riots, also called the Stonewall Uprising, began in the early hours of June 28, 1969 when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich Village in New York City. The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighbourhood residents as police roughly hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside the bar on Christopher Street, in neighbouring streets and in nearby Christopher Park. The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement in the United States and around the world. Check out what is happening in Hull Pride in Hull 2022 *Pride in ...

National Writing Day

Image
National Writing Day – June 23rd 2022 National Writing Day offers the opportunity to celebrate the many facets of creative writing. Writing allows us all the potential to express our own thoughts, feelings and ideas by putting pen to paper. Sometimes its about elaborate works of fiction, exciting and inspiring stories and prose or merely the chance to express our inner most feelings. Writing can be a shared experience or a personal journey. Sometimes when we are struggling with difficulties we find it hard to talk to those around us, but being able to write those feelings down helps us to begin the process of understanding ourselves and can manifest as poetry, song or a diary entry. The written word is powerful.

Grounding, what is it?.....We often feel stressed and on edge, grounding helps us to centre ourselves again and release tension.

Image
A guided mediation that allows you to reconnect with your physical being and become grounded and steady. Too many of us lose touch with how we are really feeling as we multi -task our way through the day. This exercise allows us to bring attention back to ourselves and refocus our energies in times of stress.

What is depression?

Image
Working in mental health the subject of depression often comes up. What is it? Do I have depression? Mental health issues are different for everyone and we all experience the world in an individual way. However a few years ago WHO (The World Health Organisation) published an animated video where someone attempts to describe depression. It may resonate with some and not others but its definitely worth a watch if you've not seen it before.
